ACC starts probe against former state minister, mayor, MPs

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started an inquiry into allegations of irregularities and corruption amounting to Tk 60 billion involving a former state minister, a mayor and eight former MPs.
They include former State Minister for Power and Energy and ex-MP of Dhaka-3 Nasrul Hamid Bipu, former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, and eight former Members of Parliament from Rajshahi.
Additionally, the ACC is investigating allegations against Dilip Kumar Agarwal, a member of the Awami League's Central Subcommittee on Industry and Commerce, and Enamul Haque Dolon, the former president of the Bangladesh Jewellers' Association (BAJUS).
Md. Akhter Hossain, ACC Director General (Prevention), confirmed these developments at a press conference on Tuesday.
He stated that the ACC has decided to investigate the allegations of irregularities and corruption in the power sector orchestrated by a syndicate involving Nasrul Hamid Bipu and others.
An inquiry has also been launched into allegations against AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, the former Mayor of Rajshahi, and eight former MPs from six constituencies.
The eight MPs are accused of amassing assets worth Tk 60 billion and fleeing to avoid accountability.
The former lawmakers include Shahriar Alam (Rajshahi-1) , Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Fazle Hossain Badsha, and Ayen Uddin (Rajshahi-3), Asaduzzaman Asad and Dara Monsur (Rajshahi-5), Enamul Haque ( Rajshahi-4), Abul Kalam Azad (Rajshahi-4) and (Rajshahi-8).
Md. Akhter Hossain also mentioned allegations against Dilip Kumar Agarwal and Enamul Haque Dolon for their involvement in a gold smuggling syndicate. They allegedly became billionaires during the Awami League's tenure through illicit means.
