ACC sues Padma Bank MD, 10 others

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 29: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against 11 people on Monday, including Managing Director (MD) of Padma Bank Limited Faisal Ahsan Chowdhury, on the charge of loan forgery in Chattogram.
Assistant Director of ACC Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 Md. Enamul Haque filed the case, and its Deputy Director Mohammad Najmus Sayadat confirmed filing of the case.
The other defendants in the case are former chairman of the bank's executive committee Mahbubul Haque Chishti alias Babul Chishti, former senior vice president (SVP) Shaukat Osman Chowdhury, and former manager operations of Khatunganj branch Md. Anwar Hossain, MD of SB Auto Bricks Industries Limited Sagir Chowdhury, owner of Alam Enterprises Abu Alam, his wife Parveen Akter, MD of National Survey Bangladesh Limited Majedul Islam, former AMD A K M Shamim, former MD Chowdhury Mostak Ahmed, and former vice chairman Dr. Athar Uddin.
According to the case statement, the accused misused power and provided a loan of Tk 100 million for three months in addition to the previous loan of Tk 140 million - despite knowing the low sale value of the borrower's mortgaged property.
The case was filed under Section 4(2) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2012 along with Sections 409, 420, 109 of the Penal Code, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947 - on the charge of embezzling Tk 100 million through transfer, conversion and cash withdrawal.
