ACC to sue five including former MP Sarwar

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file graft cases against former MP Shah Shahid Sarwar, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) additional chief engineer, a former chief engineer, a retired professor of Chittagong University (CU) and an accountant of Ideal School & College, reports UNB.
The Commission has approved filing cases against the five individuals, ACC Director General (Admin) Col Hanif Iqbal said at the regular briefing Thursday.
Sarwar, a former MP from Mymensingh, will be sued for earning illegal wealth worth Tk 2.051 million (20.51 lakh) and concealment of information.
DCC additional chief engineer Khandaker Sujat Ali will be sued for acquiring illegal wealth worth Tk 3.475 million and concealment of information of assets worth Tk 2.4 million.
A case will be filed against former chief engineer of Education Engineering Department (EED) for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 37.8 million.
The ACC will file a case against Fazli Hossain, a retired professor of CU, for not submitting his wealth statement to the Commission in due time.
Jahirul Islam, accountant of Ideal School and College, will be sued for earning ill-gotten wealth worth Tk 5.785 million and concealment of information of assets worth Tk 4.111 million.
Col Hanif Iqbal told the briefing that two 'trap cases' were filed -- one in Faridpur Wednesday and another in Patuakhali Tuesday. Traps were laid to catch the bribe takers red-handed with the help of the persons from whom bribes were sought.
Monirul Islam, copyist cum bench assistant of Faridpur district's Boalmari Upazila, was caught red-handed by the ACC while taking Tk 4,500 in bribe.
In the second instance, Abdus Salam, a surveyor of assistant commissioner (Land), Patuakhali, was caught red-handed by the Commission when he was taking Tk 10,500 in bribe.
Col Hanif said that with the filing of these two cases the number of 'trap cases' filed since August this year rose to 17 of which seven were filed against employees of the land ministry.
He said that in addition to 143 names already sent to the Truth and Accountability Commission, the ACC had 62 more applications under process.
