ACC yet to decide on filing cases against Khaleda, Hasina

Although the inquiry reports have been submitted a month ago, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is yet to take any decision on filing cases against two former premiers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina for their alleged corruption in awarding deals to Canadian company Niko, reports UNB.
"The issue of approval of filing cases regarding Niko has not yet been raised in any Commission meeting. The Commission has not yet taken any decision on it," ACC director general (admin) Col Hanif Iqbal said during the Commission's regular briefing Thursday afternoon.
Responding to a query about the approval of filing cases against the two former PMs, he also said, "I was present in the Commission's meeting today. The Niko cases were not discussed."
Replying to a question about Gatco case filed against Khaleda, her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko and 11 others, Hanif said the task of scrutinising different aspects of the case has not yet been completed.
The director general said the Commission Thursday decided to initiate the process shortly to scrutinise the complaints received by the ACC and inquiries and investigations would begin considering the importance.
Apart from the district and divisional-level committees, he said, 3-member committees would be formed in the ACC headquarters to scrutinise simultaneously the fresh complaints and those received earlier. Each of the three committees will be headed by either a deputy director or an assistant director.
In response to a question, Hanif said currently there are 70,000 backlog cases that were not brought under any committee.
To a questioner, he said the committees are expected to begin working on December 11.
Responding to a question, Hanif insisted that the Commission is functioning under its own power without any outside pressure.
He also said that Thursday's meeting approved the submission of nine charge sheets in the cases against former AL MP Mostafa Rashidi Suja and his wife, former minister Anwar Hossain Monju and his wife, former chief conservator of forest Osman Gani, former MP Mufti Shahidul Islam and Daily Janakantha owner Atiqullah Khan Masud.
