FARIDPUR, Mar 9: An acute accommodation problem has been prevailing in Faridpur district Jail.
The prison building was set up on nine acres of land in the heart of Faridpur town in 1825. The total prison area stands at 51 acres, a source preferring anonymity said adding that the prison building has become dilapidated and at any moment it or any of its part may collapse causing death or injury to the inmates and on-duty prison officers and employees.
The prison has the accommodation capacity of 714 people but at present houses 891 prisoners and under trial prisoners, among them 53 females (13 prisoners and 40 under trial prisoners).
There are four tube-wells and regular supply of water for the inmates to use. The jail super resides in an improvised living quarter. The staff quarters are ancient and near broken down which people think should be demolished and new ones constructed as soon as possible.
