ACCU annual forum begins in city

The two-day annual forum of the Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU) began in the city Friday with 400 delegates participating from 32 countries.
The key events of the forum include workshops, exchange of views, reviews of innovations and performances of credit units under the umbrella of Bangkok-based ACCU.
ACCU president Oh-man Kown and LGRD secretary AKM Fazlul Karim jointly inaugurated the mega international cooperative event at a city hotel.
The ceremony was also addressed, among others, by Ranjit Hettiarachchi, the Chief Executive Officer of ACCU and John F Rodrigues chairman of the Credit Union League of Bangladesh-CULB, which is hosting the event.
The theme of the forum this year is "Credit Union Growing to New Heights-Better Choices, Better Organisation and Better Community."
'The Forum-2008 would give a fresh look into the strategies enabling credit unions to present better choices,' said the ACCU CEO.
The annual general meeting of the ACCU will be held during the forum to be concluded with the Dhaka Declaration, said Emdad Hossain Malek secretary of the CULB.
At the inaugural ceremony ACCU board and management rewarded Supachai Srisupaaksorn of Thailand as a unique leader in the financial world especially in operating model credit union.
The Netherlands based Cordaid was rewarded as the best institution to support capacity development of cooperative organisations and boosting cooperative movement.
Earlier, the initial events of the ACCU forum started since September 21 through holding workshops attended by the delegates and field visits in different credit unions and microfinance organisations in the capital and outside.
The ACCU has affiliated more than 16,000 credit unions with 20.5 million individual members in 26 Asian countries and deals assets and deposits worth $60 billion.
CULB as an ACCU affiliate and federation in Bangladesh coordinates 410 credit unions with 180,000 members.
