ACCU forum agrees to promote credit union operations

The 2008 forum of the Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU) concluded on Saturday with all the 400 delegates from 32 countries agreeing to the Dhaka Declaration.
The Dhaka Declaration called the cooperative organisations to put efforts in achieving millennium development goals by utilising credit unions as vehicles for establishing social justice and economic development.
The two-day forum, held at Hotel Sheraton, was organised by the ACCU and its local affiliate, the Cooperative Credit Union League of Bangladesh-CCLB.
"Contribute in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals by reaching to significant number of low-income poor men and women through the adoption of the Credit Union Microfinance Innovations (CUMI),' a prime clause of the 8-point declaration announced.
As social enterprises the ACCU member organisations operate deposit schemes and financing activities to help individual members, especially the poor people in self-employment and sustainable commercial activities.
The ACCU forum stressed study on youth market and develops marketing campaigns and financial literacy programs. It also agreed to take programs to promote efficiency and professionalism of credit union operations.
The declaration acknowledged the need for promoting integration through national credit union development policies, establishment of Credit Union Risk Based Supervision (CURBS), and setting up compliance units to comply with CURBS.
The main sessions of the forum covered workshops, interactions, experience sharing and review on performances of ACCU members across the world.
The annual general meeting of the ACCU will be held today (Sunday) to elect new leadership.
Established in 1971, Bangkok-based ACCU, affiliates more than 16,000 credit unions with 20.5 million individual members in 26 countries and deal in $60 billion worth assets and deposits.
CULB represents ACCU in Bangladesh and as a federation of 413 cooperatives with 180,000 members, CULB deals with Tk 2.82 billion assets and Tk 1.60 billion deposits in 2007.
