Act against those who made ACC controversial: TIB

Tuesday, 15 November 2011

The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Monday said those who made the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) controversial during the military-backed caretaker government (CG) should be brought to justice, reports UNB. The corruption watchdog body said the ACC would have to be made fully independent and effective for curbing graft and establishing good governance in the country. "If the ACC is made weaker through legal reforms for its controversial role during the military-backed CG, it'll be suicidal for the government," the TIB said in a statement. Referring to newspaper reports, the TIB said it welcomes the withdrawal of the provision of taking permission before filing any graft case against public servants from the draft for the proposed amendment to the ACC Act. TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the provision of filing graft cases against public servants without prior permission creates a scope for fulfilling the people's aspiration and it will have the reflection of the government's election pledges. He said there should be such provision so that the ACC can take decision independently against the public servantsever if any graft allegation arises.
