Acting IGP sees ‘instigation’ behind Tangail incident

Terming unfortunate the killings of three people in police firing in Tangail district, acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muklhesur Rahman on Sunday said the incident might have taken place at the instigation by a vested quarter. At least three people were killed and over 50 others injured, four with bullets, as police allegedly opened fire and charged baton on some people demonstrating against torture on a youth and his mother in Kalihati upazila on Friday afternoon.
“Instant measures have been taken, including the arrest of the offenders involved in the assault of a youth in front of his mother on Tuesday. Even after that the demonstrations by locals was unwarranted. I think a vested quarter might have provoked the incident,” he told reports at the Police Headquarters during a briefing about security measures ahead of Eid-Ul-Azha.
 
Justifying the police action, he said police were forced to swing into action as the demonstrators caused public sufferings blocking the busy Dhaka-Tangail highway in addition to making attempts to attack the local police station. Mukhlesur Rahman said they do not want anyone to be killed for maintaining law and order situation. He said a three-member probe committee headed by Additional DIG Md Alamgir Alam has already been formed by the Police Headquarters to investigate the incident. Necessary action will be taken once the report from the committee is available, the acting IGP added. About security measures taken by the police on the eve of the upcoming Eid, Mukhlesur Rahman said all-out special measures have already been taken to ensure security at the places of public gathering, including shopping malls, railway stations, bus and launch terminals as well as cattle markets across the country.
 
Besides, plainclothes police alongside the uniformed ones have been deployed in those public places to control the activities of ‘Oggyan Party’ and ‘ Malam Party’, he added.
 
“We won’t tolerate if any policeman found involved in the extortion of cattle markets or cattle-laden vehicles, and in that case we will not only take departmental action but also take action under criminal procedures as we’re very much active in this regard,” Mukhles added, according to BSS.
