Action to be taken against those involved in Hallmark scam, says Suranjit

Saturday, 8 September 2012

Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said that the government would take action against those involved with the Hallmark scam, reports UNB.
"The Prime Minister (PM) has taken stern stance in this regard. The swindled money will be back to national coffer. The government will not hesitate to take action against the people involved with the scam," he said at a discussion at the Public Library in the city.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the discussion marking the 120th birth anniversary of late Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy.
Industries Minister Dilip Barua, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam and Awami League (AL) organising secretary Ahmed Hossain also spoke at the meeting, chaired by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote general secretary Arun Sarkar Rana.
Suranjit, also an advisory council member of the AL, blamed the appointment of political figures in the board of directors for such type of loan scam and suggested forming search committees, if needed, to appoint the bank board of directors.
He said: "The people with experience in the field should be appointed as directors. A law can be enacted with a view to appointing board members of state-owned banks."
The senior lawmaker said that Finance Minister AMA Muhith has set an example in the country's democracy by admitting his fault and seeking pardon for his remarks on the Hallmark scam.
"In my long career as Member of Parliament (MP), I didn't see anybody to talk in this way. It is the philosophy of democracy. This type of democratic behaviour can be shown only by the grand alliance government."
Suranjit alleged that cashing on the Hallmark scam, the opposition
is trying to fish in troubled waters and trying to misguide the people of the country.
