It is a common complain by the students that they cannot remember their lessons at the right time when appearing at the exam or when appearing before the viva board.
Many of them think that their memory power is not satisfactory. Learners, at all levels and everywhere on this earth, want to enhance their memory power. In his book Adhunik Niyomey Lekhapora (Studying in Modern Method) published from Sheba Prokashoni of Dhaka, Dr. Reza Ahmed has indicated seven ways about how to increase our memory power. He suggests that by following these tips one may attain photographic memory. Poet Nazrul Islam had this photographic memory and so we can see the use of Urdu and Persian language in his writing.
Dr. Reza Ahmed has suggested the following tips for development of memory power:
Visualisaiton or seeing
Visualising is the most powerful tool for memory. Our mind can remember anything better if we can take a picture. Try to visualise what you are reading. If you see a movie for two hours, you can remember it much better compared to remembering it a book that you have read for two hours.
Association
Connecting is very important to remember any piece of information. Whenever we need to remember something new, we can always connect this with our old knowledge. This association of new knowledge with previous knowledge is important in remembering any new information.
Doing something extraordinary
We can remember anything better if it is extraordinary. If I ask you would be able to say the story of 'Sohrab-Rostom' that you read some 10 years back, you will be able to recollect it easily since you took part in the drama that was staged in the class. So in order to remember anything better, we will have to make a participative approach.
Imagination
Imagination helps us remember anything better. To remember any information, take the help of your imaginative power. If you have to remember banana, think about its colour, shape, smell. Also eat the banana in your imagination. May be you will enjoy eating the banana. In this way, try to utilise your five senses and other emotions. The many perspectives you will try to use to remember information, the stronger your neuro-connection will be. As a result, you would enjoy photographic memory.
Use of colour
Try to use colour in your imagination and notes. This will enhance your memory power 50 times.
Ryhmes
Another way to remember anything is through rhymes. You can remember many rhymes that you learned during childhood. Make rhymes based on the lessons and remembering your lesson will make it all the easier.
Integration
Considering anything on the whole that makes it easier to remember. After finishing one chapter, try to write the gist of it.
