Acute bad smell in WASA-supplied drinking water

Residents in many parts of the city, particularly in Shewrapara area, complained about outbreak of various diseases like dysentery and diarrhoea as they were forced to use Dhaka WASA-supplied contaminated water, which exuded acute bad smell and tasted very bitter, reports UNB.
Residents in such areas also complained that even after boiling, the water was still unfit for human consumption. They suspect that drinking water pipes in many places of the city have been damaged and contaminated from sewerage lines seeped into the drinking water supply lines.
"Piped water supplied by Dhaka WASA gives acute bad smell and tastes very bitter these days. After washing hands with such piped water it exudes a smell of human excreta," an old woman resident complained.
She said they had been getting such contaminated water for over one month but no steps had been taken by the authorities to remedy the situation.
Abdur Rahim, an inhabitant of Iqbal Road in Shewrapara area, said the water got contaminated as the water pipes in the area were found damaged in many areas. These damaged pipes got connected with sewerage lines that must be the reason for such bad smell, he suspected.
