RAJSHAHI, Sept 22: An acute shortage of dollar has been prevailing in Rajshahi for about a month. Banning of dollar endorsement by the money changers has caused such a crisis of dollar. Hundreds of people of Rajshahi region willing to go abroad are facing difficulty for want of dollar.
Sources said, tourists and patients willing to go to India used to endorse money from 13 money changers in the northern region including four in Rajshahi. But recently the Indian High Commission has made a rule that they would not accept any dollar issued by any money changer. For this reason, people willing to go abroad are rushing to banks where limited supply of dollar is causing crisis. As a result, people willing to go abroad are running from one bank to another but return empty handed. They are facing immense trouble for endorsing dollar from the banks. There have been complaints that the banks are harassing people during endorsement of dollar from the banks.
M. Akther Hossain, a victim of dollar shortage, said he recently went to the Rajshahi branch of Prime Bank for dollar but a bank official said if he wants to buy dollar, he will have to open a bank account. When he said he will endorse the dollars in his passport, the official told him that he needed recommendation from an account holder of the bank. The next day, he went to the bank with an account holder but the official said that there was no dollar left.
On the other hand, patients who need to go to India for treatment, are the worst suffers. Many are forced to spend considerable amounts of extra money for endorsing dollar from Dhaka.
