CHITTAGONG, Oct 01: Acute water crisis in the port city has surpassed all previous magnitudes. Unabated load-shedding has aggravated the crisis, sources said.
Load-shedding disrupts normal industrial production, trade and commerce as well as normal life of city-dwellers in this holy month of Ramadan.
Export-oriented ready-made garments (RMG) industries and other perishable industrial sectors are the worst sufferers which are on the verge of incurring huge financial losses.
On the other hand, in view of undertaking production process during peak hour, owners of industrial units are to pay excess power bill and overtime dues even at double rate and as such overall production cost increases many times.
Acute water crisis has put the city-dwellers into a state of multiple sufferings. Under the prevalent power crisis, the pumps of Chittagong WASA are not able to drill water properly, C'WASA sources said.
According to PDB source, daily requirement of power in the city area is 450 MW but due to multiple problems, load-shedding persists at an average rate of 150 MW.
