CHITTAGONG, Feb 24: The entire Port City of Chittagong is now under the grip of acute water crisis because the lifting capacity of Chittagong WASA has reduced drastically.
Certain areas are reported to have been deprived of normal water supply for long 10 to 15 days. Consequently, even the city dwellers are frequently bringing out jar processions in those areas.
Moreover, sufferings of the residents of most of the areas are also on the rise where water supply is ensured through rationing system.
It is gathered that with the decline in water level of the Kaptai Lake, saline water of the sea enters into the river Halda through Karnaphuli river during high tide. Mohara Water Treatment Project of Chittagong WASA capable of generating 20 million gallons of water, pumps water from the Halda river.
As the water of the river Halda contains excess salinity, Chittagong WASA has reduced water generation leading to such an acute water crisis in the city.
Normal and regular water supply is hardly ensured and almost all areas of the Port City are deprived of adequate water supply at this stage.
Chittagong WASA sources said the authority is trying its level best to tackle the situation.
As the salinity in the water has compelled the authority to reduce water pumping, alternative arrangement is being made to resolve water crisis and rescuing the city dwellers from prolonged sufferings.
