Adamjee Jute Mills after its closure

Friday, 7 November 2014

The massive Adamjee Jute Mills in Narayanganj remains shut down. It was closed down quite a long time back. The closure followed the then government's divestiture drive. The sharp fall in the global demand for jute and jute products also hastened the historic mill's shutdown. Many people are curious to know about the present state of this mill, which once provided job to thousands of workers and jute experts.
Most of us do not know what has happened to those people after the mill's closure. As there are no jute mills in the country that could be called fully functional, the former staff of Adamjee Jute Mills are possibly jobless or passing a retired life. A few may have switched over to different kinds of job. And who owns the vast land of the factory now? Where have the machines gone, finally? We have reasons to believe that after it became free of state acquisition, the whole unit has passed into some other entities' ownership. It is a matter of policy. None should question its legitimacy.
Our only concern is the transparency of the whole process.
