ADC Harun suspended over torturing BCL leaders

The government has suspended Harun-or-Rashid, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), on charges of brutally assaulting two central leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Saturday night.
A notification, signed by Senior Secretary Md Mostafizur Rahman, was issued to this end on Monday afternoon.
ADC Harun has been suspended as per section 39 (1) of the Bangladesh Public Service Act 2018, it reads.
Meanwhile, BCL president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Enan visited the DMP headquarters on Monday over police brutality and demanded exemplary punishment to the torturers.
At that time, the DMP commissioner assured them of ensuring maximum legal punishment.
DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker disclosed the development to the media after the BCL leaders' meeting with DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq at the DMP headquarters.
A three-member committee was formed on Monday afternoon to investigate the allegation. The committee has been asked to submit the report within two working days.
The victims are BCL central organising secretary and Dhaka University's Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit president Anwar Hossain Nayem, and central science affairs secretary and Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall unit general secretary Sharif Ahmed Munim.
Nayem's condition is critical as he is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
The incident caused a furore among BCL leaders and many took to social media to protest, demanding justice.
On Sunday afternoon, ADC Harun was withdrawn from Ramna zone and attached to public order management division.
But on the evening of the day, he was transferred to the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
Seeking anonymity, a BCL leader told the FE that Harun and a female police officer were at BIRDEM General Hospital on Saturday night, and they had an extramarital affair.
The female officer's husband, who is also a BCS cadre officer, went there along with two BCL leaders. There, a quarrel ensued between the ADC and the husband.
At one stage, the two BCL leaders were taken to Shahbagh police station and brutally tortured in the OC's room for about an hour, the BCL leader added.
ADC Harun gained notoriety for beating and assaulting teachers, journalists, lawyers, student protesters, opposition politicians and even police colleagues.
