Addressing the problem of water in everyday life

Monday, 23 March 2009

Dr. Shamsul Alam
Water, water, everywhere, And all the boards did shrink. Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink. -- Samuel Taylor
Thousands have lived without love, not one without water. -- W.H.Auden
It is the potential for economic growth that provides the basis for the development of countries, for bringing to people essential goods and services, such as water to drink and facilities for healthcare. -- Lee R. Raymond

ALMOST everyday we watch over the television that there is a problem of water (drinking, cooking, washing etc.) in our daily life. People are standing for water by giving up their earnings. Is this not an economic loss! In the agricultural sector, there is a problem of water for irrigation. Is this not the one of the causes for less production or low agricultural output. In the river, water is a problem for navigation.
When we read the newspapers, there is enough information about the water scarcity in our society. Is safe drinking water a permanent problem in our country? We can not solve or minimize this problem. Definitely someone will argue or differ with this issue as worldwide, over one billion people -- roughly one in six -- lack access to safe, clean drinking water. What is the real solution or forecast? We really do not know undone the answer.
Even on only one day -- March 22, observed as World Water Day -- we are not in a position to provide safe drinking water to our whole population. Like no other resource, water is the foundation for life. At least the observance of the day should have an occasion for us to reaffirm our commitment to ensure a sustainable source of safe water to the members of our communities by providing them from our own source. We must remember gifting water is the gift of life.
