ADSM for observing proclamation week from Jan 06

FE REPORT | Sunday, 5 January 2025

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee have announced to the media the observance of the 'July Proclamation Week' nationwide from January 06 to 11.
The announcement was made at a joint press conference convened at the central office of the ADSM in the capital on Saturday.
At the event, leaders of the organisations reiterated their demand that the interim government publish the 'July Revolution Proclamation' by January 15.
This demand was previously placed at the 'March for Unity' rally at the Central Shaheed Minar on December 31, according to them.
They, however, expressed dissatisfaction at the government's lack of visible action even a lapse of four days after the rally.
ADSM convener Hasnat Abdullah said, "We demand the government announce the declaration by January 15. No visible step is in sight yet in line with the government's assurance to make the declaration with collective participation."
He urged the interim government to act promptly, saying: "If the government takes any effective step regarding the declaration, we stand ready to share our draft prepared on public input."
Mr Hasnat outlined a series of programmes planned for the week, including leaflet distribution, rally and public engagement across the country.
"We want to connect with people countrywide to ensure their voices are reflected in the declaration," he mentioned.
Nasiruddin Patwari, convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, in his speech encouraged participation of the public through digital platforms.
"Leaflets will be available on our website and Facebook page. People are urged to print and distribute them locally to build momentum for the declaration. The future of Bangladesh hinges on this declaration."
Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organiser of ADSM, moderated the briefing.
Nagorik Committee spokesperson Samantha Sharmin and co-spokesperson Salehuddin Sifat, among others, also spoke.
According to the organisations, the failure to see any tangible state action in the coming days will result in stricter programmes.
It was learned that the ADSM had a preparation to unveil the 'July Revolution Declaration' on December 31.
The government announced on December 30 its intent to adopt the 'July Mass Uprising Proclamation' involving all parties to avoid any split among political entities that fought together against the fascist regime.
In response, the ADSM renamed their event as 'March for Unity' the same day.
