Finance Adviser Dr Mirza Azizul Islam Thursday said the issuing companies need to diversify their products to tap the full potential of the country's capital market.
"The capital market stakeholders should concentrate on diversifying the market with various products like derivatives and intermediaries to further develop the market, which has seen robust growth in the last few years," he told a function at a city hotel, marking the launching of Capital Market Journalists' Forum (CMJF).
The market capitalisation currently accounts for 20 percent of GDP as it is contributing immensely to the country's economy, the adviser said adding the market has made tremendous growth reaching the level in only three years from 10-11 per cent of GDP in early 2006 and only 4-5 per cent in 2003-04.
"We, however, remain well behind neighbouring countries' capital markets," said Mirza stressing the need for diversification of the market and lessening the domination of financial institutions, which accounted for more than 50 per cent.
