Advisers approve amended Upazila Parishad ordinance

The council of advisers of the caretaker government approved Sunday the Local Government (Upazila Parishad) (Amend-ment) Ordinance 2008, reports UNB.
After the council meeting, CA's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim briefed newsmen, saying that the council of advisers approved the ordinance.
The meeting also approved a proposal for signing an agreement on Military Grants between Bangladesh and Turkey. Under the agreement, Bangladesh Armed Forces will receive military grants to the tune of about 330,870 US dollars.
The meeting also approved Bangladesh Laws (Revision and Declaration) (Amendment) Ordinance 2008, which is aimed at amending Bangladesh Laws (revision and declaration) Act 1973.
Following approval of the Ordinance, Bangladesh Code would be available on CD and also on website. "If any confusion arises, then the original gazette of a law would be followed."
The council of advisers gave their nod to a proposal for retrospective ratification bringing Afghanistan under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) Agreement.
At the meeting a presentation on water logging in some areas of Satkhira was made by Water Resources Adviser Dr CS Karim who projected sufferings of people caused by water stagnation.
The CA directed the authorities concerned to take "immediate measures for mitigating the sufferings of the affected people".
He also instructed the authorities concerned to form committees comprising district administrations of Jessore, Satkhira and Khulna, joint-forces' members and officials of the Water Development Board to find out ways of solving the water-logging problem.
The meeting was informed that already relief materials were sent to the areas affected by water logging.
