Thursday, 3 January 2008

Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and Agricultural Adviser Dr CS Karim placed country's requirement for 100,000 tonnes of TSP and as much amount of MOP to six foreign envoys, in the wake of a great demand for fertiliser in the prime farming season, reports UNB.
The Advisers of the caretaker government placed the requirement in a meeting with the diplomats held at the Foreign Ministry Wednesday morning to discuss the possibility of procuring fertiliser from their countries.
The envoys, who attended the meeting are Russian Ambassador Gennady P Trotsenko, Chinese Ambassador Zheng Qingdian, Moroccan Ambassador Mohammed Houroro, UAE Ambassador Khalfan Battal Ali Al-Mansouri, Charge D' Affaires of Qatar A Al Mohammed A Al-Tamimi and Charge D' Affaires of Saudi Arabia Sami J Hindi.
Speaking to the media thereafter, the Foreign Adviser said: "My understanding is that while we have sufficient stock as of now, we should be prepared for any eventuality, as we cannot afford to take any chance with the forthcoming boro crop. So we invited the envoys of potential source countries and explained to them our needs."
Dr CS Karim reiterated that there was 'no shortage' presently, but the government needed to make sure there was sufficient quantity in the future.
The Foreign Adviser, Dr Iftekhar Chowdhury, added that there might be other sources not represented by embassies in Dhaka such as Belarus and Tunisia, and the Foreign Ministry would take measures to contact those capitals directly.
