Aftab appointed chairman of SME Foundation

The country's leading business person Aftab ul Islam has been appointed the chairman of the Small and Medium Enterprise Foundation (SMEF) for a period of the next two years, according to a press release issued by the foundation Thursday.
He succeeded three former chairpersons of the SMEF who were respectively Mr. Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, Mr Ayub Quadri and Mr Dilip Barua, the incumbent Industries Minister.
Mr. Aftab was presidents of American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
He also served as President of the Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) and he is still widely recognised at home and abroad for persuading the government into using information technology for efficiency and competitiveness and making computer products duty-free for its wider usage.
Mr. Aftab, son of Mr. Tajul Islam, was born on November 18, 1950 in Comilla.
He graduated first in commerce and then in law. Later he went on to be a Chartered Accountant and a fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh.
Mr. Aftab began his career with the NCR Corporation, a US-based multinational IT giant, in 1976 and worked his way up to become first Bangladesh-born Country Manager (CEO) for its operation in Bangladesh.
In 1992, Mr. Aftab launched his own business, International Office Equipment (IOE), after the NCR closed down its direct operation in Bangladesh.
