AG blames SCBA for implementing opposition agenda

Monday, 10 October 2011

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam Sunday alleged that the President and Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) were engaged in implementing the opposition political parties' agenda by using the association. "The Bar president is trying to mislead the lawyers and also the countrymen by making false and fabricated statement centring the death of Advocate MU Ahmed," he said while talking to reporters at his office here after exchanging greetings with the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court following the convention of the Supreme Court. Such exchange of greetings among the judges and the lawyers after reopening of the Supreme Court at the end of the autumn vacation is an old tradition, but the current SCBA majority office-bearers did not take part in the programme this year protesting against the death of Advocate MU Ahmed as they are the supporters of the major opposition political parties. The Supreme Court reopened Sunday after more than a month-long autumn vacation. On a question, the Attorney General referred to the medical report and said Ahmed's death was not unusual as he suffered a cardiac arrest. MU Ahmed died on August 26 in a hospital in the city. But his family alleged that Ahmed's death followed torture in police custody.
