MADARIPUR, Nov 19 (UNB): The number of muggings rose on Kawrakandi-Mawa route in the last several days as members of Aggyan Party became active ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
A total of 10 people fell victim to Aggyan Party men in the last few days.
People of 21 districts of the southern region use Kawrakandi-Mawa route for communication with Dhaka. Taking the advantage of the situation, a good number of hoodlums board buses, launches and ferries everyday in the guise of hawkers. They sell chutney, green coconut, orange and other food items mixed with sedatives.
In some cases, they make victims inhale something, which has a sedative effect and rob them.
Their main target is cattle traders. However, homebound passengers are also falling victim to the gang members.
They take away valuables from the victims after making them unconscious through feeding foods mixed with sedatives.
An Aggyan Party man, Hamid Khan, has recently been arrested while selling sedative food in a bus.
He said an organised gang under the leadership of Dabu Bepari loot valuables of the people in the guise of hawkers.
Members of law-enforcing agencies, however, are not active though the mugging incidents are on the rise, locals alleged.
