Agri dev project gains ground in B'baria

BRAHMANBARIA, Aug 30: Purbanchal Samannito Krishi Unnayan Prokalpa (PSKUP), an agriculture development project, has gained popularity due to its contribution to boosting agricultural production in the district, sources said
Apart from Brahmanbaria district, the project has been working to meet the production targets of crops, flowers and hybrid vegetables in the country's eastern region since July, 2006.
The project, approved by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) will continue its operation until June, 2009, the sources added.
The project, through its different programmes, has been contributing a lot to improving the life-style of the marginal farmers in the region and changing the country's socio-economic condition.
The PSKUP is run jointly by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) in eight districts- Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Hobiganj and Moulvibazar.
With a view to producing quality seeds, creating awareness about using modern technology and utilising the potentialities of varieties of crops in Brahmanbaria district, PSKUP has so far arranged various training on organic farming using modern technology, quality seed production and preservation, using agri-inputs like drum-seeder and spray-machine and current crops cultivation for the farmers.
About 390 farmers had been given training under the PSKUP project in the past. Presently, many other farmers are taking training under the project.
The crops and vegetables being cultivated under the care of PSKUP are 'apple kul', papaya, 'IPSA bean', gourd, sweet gourd, chilli, cucumber, sugarcane (E-16), jute, seedless lemon, brinjal, oil-seed (T-6), black pepper, okra, turmeric, paddy (IR-50, BR-3, BR-23, BR-26), 'kakrol', 'kachu', tube rose, etc.
The PSKUP has already begun to display modern technology, quality seeds, seed production, fertiliser management, irrigation management, current crops, obsolete crops, integrated pest management(IPM), leaf colour chart (LCC), etc. at its display centres in Brahmanbaria district.
PSKUP will completely be run at the government expense. The exhibition plots in eight upazilas of Brahmanbaria district have been selected by the project and the show will continue until 2009, the sources said.
The farmers of Suhilpur village under Sadar upazila in Brahmanbaria district are expecting a bumper production of 'tube-rose' during the current season due to using organic method and favourable weather.
Besides, the farmers of Majlishpur and Natai unions of the district have also expected a bumper IPSA bean production in the current season.
The project has allocated Tk 2,55,000 for the current season in eight upazilas of Brahmanbaria district.
