Thursday, 28 August 2014

Ahle Sunnat on Thursday called nationwide hartal (shutdown) for Sunday protesting killing of a leader of the Islami Front, who hosted religion-based TV programmes. Maulana Nurul Islam Faruqui was found murdered in yet-unclear circumstances at his Dhaka residence on Wednesday night. Police say miscreants tied up everyone at Maolana Nurul Islam Farooqi’s residence before slaughtering him at East Razabazar. He was the presidium member of Islami Front and affiliated with Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and also the Khatib of High Court Mazar mosque. Faruqi hosted two programmes – ‘Shantir Pothe’ and ‘Kafela’ – on Channel I, a leading private television channel. Hearing the news of the killing of their leader, the activists of Islami Front and Chhatra Sena staged protests near his residence on Green Road in Dhaka. Agitators in Chittagong vandalised several vehicles. Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat has called an agitation in front of National Press Club this (Thursday) afternoon to protest against the killing, its Secretary General ANM Masood Al Qadri said, according to private TV channels.
