Aila kills livestock in Khulna

KHULNA, June 02: Over 26 thousand cattleheads have died and property worth about Tk 30 million have been damaged in five upazilas of Khulna district, which was recently hit by Aila and tidal waves.
About 34 thousand families were affected and the livestock death toll might rise for want of fresh grazing grounds, District Livestock Office sources said.
District Livestock Officer Obaidul Karim said storm Aila hit on May 25 and high tidal waves also lashed at the same time. As a result, 18,500 hectares of grazing grounds went under saline water in Paikgacha, Koyra, Dacop, Batiaghata and Dumuria upzilas of the district.
As many as 322 cows, 12,017 goats, 269 sheep, 23,013 hens and 953 swans have died, according to District Livestock office.
The sources said that scarcity of fodder was prevailing in these areas and about 1,624 tonnes of cattle feed were damaged by the storm.
