Air-conditioned buses on city routes

Saturday, 30 October 2010

The Dhaka city's traffic problem instead of showing any sign of improvement has been worsening everyday. A journey that is supposed to take a maximum of 20 to 30 minutes now takes more than a couple of hours. Of all the problems the Dhaka city is now beset with, the traffic congestion should be placed at the top. The traffic department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been candid to accept the fact that they are clueless about finding a solution to the problem.
The authorities have been talking big about solving the nagging traffic problem. The projects that they are planning to implement include elevated expressway, underground rail and flyovers. But these are highly capital-intensive projects and would take years for implementation.
The government might consider the import of a substantial number of air-conditioned buses for playing on major routes of Dhaka city. In that case, many office-goers, who use their own cars and add to the city's traffic problem, would prefer using those buses.
However, prior to taking such a step, the government would have to drive out first the old and dilapidated passenger buses from the city roads. It is a pity that the government called off its much-publicized drive against old buses before getting any tangible outcome. The suspension of the drive, actually, proved the scepitcs, who had foretold the fate of the drive, to be true.
