A&J Nat’l Snooker Championship begins at Chittagong Club

CHATTOGRAM, July 24: The 33rd A&J National Snooker Championship jointly organised by Chittagong Club Ltd and Bangladesh Billiard Federation was inaugurated on Monday at the club's Snooker Hall in the city.
Managing Director of A&J Group Ikramul Karim Chowdhury, MP, and chairman of chief host Chittagong Club Ltd Miah Mohammed Abdur Rahim inaugurated the championship.
Title Sponsor A&J Group is financially patronising the event while Meghna Group of Industries and Bridgestone Tyre Eastern Group are providing financial support as well.
Secretary of Bangladesh Billiard and Snooker Federation Syed Mahbub, former chairman of Chittagong Club Professor Dr Saifuddin Md Tarek and MA Salam spoke as chief guests.
Member-in-charge of the Billiard Snooker and Pool Division SM Shafiul Azam presented details of the tournament. He thanked the club for organising the event. Dainik Azadi and Channel 24 are media partners of the championship.
Vice chairman of Chittagong Club Ltd Al Sadat Dobhash Sagor, executive members Jabed Hashem Nannu, Salauddin Ahmed, Md Imran Ahmed, Rumana Hayat, Dr Alak Nandi, Zahid Sultan Tipu, Sultanul Abedin Chowdhury and snooker convener (former member-in-charge) Nuruddin Jabed, among others, were present.
Ikramul Karim said spreading of sports is the only way to save the students and youths from the curse of drug addiction.
He sought cooperation of all in arranging sports tournaments for the aged group and the upcoming generation in near future.
The country's first national snooker championship started in Chattogram in 1993 and it is the Chittagong Club Ltd that initiated the event, he said.
A total of 12 clubs have been participating in this year's snooker championship. The clubs are: Chittagong Club Ltd, Dhaka Club Ltd, Comilla City Club, Bangladesh Billiard Centre Dhaka, Q&U Billiard Dhaka, Uttara Club Ltd, Comilla Club, Narayanganj Club Ltd, Gulshan Club Ltd, California Pool & Snooker Dhaka, Amateur Billiard Club Dhaka and Sports and Billiards Dhaka having 116 players.
The tournament will continue until August 02, and closing and prize giving ceremony will be held the same night, said a statement of the Chittagong Club Ltd.
