Aktel mobile phone network opens at Kaptai

Post and Telecomm- unica tions Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed Raju formally inaugurated the Aktel mobile phone network of Kaptai upazila under Rangamati hill district by receiving a call from State Minister for CHT Affairs Dipankar Talukdar.
The minister received the call at his Banani residence in the city Saturday morning and talked with Dipankar Talukdar for several minutes by using the Aktel mobile phone network, reports UNB.
BTCL Managing Director Khaberuzzaman and TeleTalk Managing Director M Mujibur Rahman were present on the occasion.
The telecommunications minister said the present government is working tirelessly to develop the telecommunication sector for building a 'Digital Bangladesh' by 2021.
He said they have already introduced TeleTalk mobile phone network in 20 upazilas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts for improving the life style of the people in the region.
"Aktel has installed its mobile network in Kaptai Upazila today and it's a milestone in the country's telecom services," he added.
Mentioning the government's initiatives in the telecom sector, Razi Uddin Raju said the government gave free land-phone connections to subscribers in every upazila.
The government, he said, also reduced the Broadband Internet connection fee to Tk 800 from Tk 1,000 and the BTCL lease-line connection fee to Tk 5,000 from Tk 12,200.
About the present condition of BTCL, the minister said the number of BTCL land-phone subscribers increased by 50,000 to 9,00,000 within a year. "We hope to give at least another 10 million phone connections by 2012."
He said the government has a plan to manufacture modern telephone and mobile-phone sets, laptop computer, electronic digital meter, cellphone battery and battery chargers at the state-owned telephone factory at Tongi.
