Explaining about the re-branding, Axiata (Bangladesh) Ltd Managing Director and CEO Michael Kuehner said, "We aim to develop an emotional link with the culture and roots of this nation. The cultural heritage of Bangladesh is very rich and it has always positive impacts on social and economic activities. Therefore, we have chosen the Bangla word 'Robi' to be our identity."
"Robi starts its journey today with the slogan 'Your strength is with you, get enlightened with your own strength.' The brand will create a new era in the telecommunication technology of Bangladesh," the Axiata MD said in a press conference.
About the new name, Robi Head of Corporate Affairs Segufta Yasmin Samad said the word has been chosen as it carries a range of dominant meanings of emotional and cultural bondage of the people of this land and brings the first gleam of light that shows us the day.
"Robi is the symbol of harvest that brings satisfying smiles on the faces of the farmers. Robi, meaning the sun, is the source of energy that vitalises agriculture, weather and life everywhere," Samad said, adding that the word Robi is also familiar to all Bangla-speaking people, as it is the Bengali name of their pride poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Axiata Chief Commercial Officer Biddyut Kumar Basu asserted Robi would remain beside the people of Bangladesh and incorporate Bangla in all facets of its work.
Basu said Robi (formerly Aktel) has been providing a wide range of services to the growing mobile telecom market in Bangladesh, adding that currently it holds about 20 per cent of the subscriber market share.
"In a bid to boost its presence and market share, it has embarked upon this transformation t tap the possibilities to grow and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country," the Axiata CCO said.
He said Robi has now 10.35 million subscribers. It holds a revenue market share of 19.8 per cent. The number of BTS is 5,400 with geographic network coverage of 80 per cent and population coverage of 86 per cent.
About facilities for customers, Basu said their subscribers would have the power to choose whichever suits them best from a variety of affordable survices, adding that Robi will offer many attractive offers including 40 paisa to 148 paisa per minute, multiple bill plans, flat rates and no hidden cost like call setup charges.
"Our improved services benefit the customers, as we take care to resolve any problem at the earliest convenience with our 1, 00,000 recharge centres, over 26,000 SIM sale centres, 450 services points and 24-hour call centre facilities with lowest charge," he said.
On its new journey, Robi celebrated birth of the babies, born Sunday at Marie Stopes clinics across the country by sponsoring their medical expenses. The programme was titled 'Robi Shishu.' The same day, the cell phone operating company launched a project titled 'Robi Polli' in association with Rahimafrooz Bangladesh Ltd to illuminate 500 homes in 50 villages throughout Bangladesh with solar energy.
