AL acting chief distraught over SC orders staying bail to Hasina

Tuesday, 28 August 2007

The Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Monday expressed his disappointments over the Supreme Court (SC) order staying High Court (HC)-granted bail to his detained party chief and ex-premier Sheikh Hasina, reports UNB.
He said not only the party-men but also all of the countrymen are "frustrated and aggrieved" at this order.
"We thought that our President Sheikh Hasina would get bail, but the order has frustrated us. And I think injustice is being done to our president," the AL acting chief told reporters at his Gulshan residence while giving reaction over the court edicts.
The SC Monday further stayed the HC orders that had granted bail to former premier Sheikh Hasina in two "extortion" cases.
The AL acting president requested party-men to overcome the situation with patience rather than getting excited and aggressive.
"We are unhappy with the court orders, but we have no alternative but to accept the verdict as we have respect for the rule of law," Zillur said.
"The SC didn't revoke the HC order granting Sheikh Hasina bail. So, we look forward to a ray of hope," he said, adding that they would move the HC for quick hearing of the writ petitions filed by Sheikh Hasina.
Terming the cases filed against Sheikh Hasina "baseless" and "fabricated", Zillur said their leader must not be punished under such cases.
He expressed his hope that Sheikh Hasina would get justice and would soon be released.
AL leaders Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Tofail Ahmed, Begum Matia Chowdhury, Subid Ali Bhuiyan, Shahara Khatun, Dipu Moni and Faridunnahar Lailee were also present at the press briefing.
