Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Wednesday alleged that a move is on to appoint some 50 workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP as presiding officers and assistant presiding officers for the December 29 parliamentary polls, reports UNB.
Besides, secretaries of various ministries are also working outside the capital in favour of BNP-Jamaat alliance, it said.
At a press briefing at the AL Media Centre, AL Election Steering Committee co-chairman HT Imam alleged that Jamaat's Majlish-e-Shura member Fazlul Haq, teacher of Tejgaon College and former thana ameer of Jamaat Abdul Karim and many 'Rokans' of the party have already been appointed presiding and assistant presiding officers.
"Now we have come to know that 50 more leaders of the 4-party alliance are going to be appointed to the posts," he said.
HT Imam further alleged that many high government officials, including Jute secretary Abdur Rashid Sarker, Water Resources secretary Dr M Ayub Miah and Land secretary M Moniruzzaman Khan, are visiting district and upazila headquarters to influence the junior level election officials.
The purpose of their visit to the districts and upazilas are 'nothing but an attempt to influence' the junior officers who had been appointed as returning and assistant returning officers, he said and urged the caretaker government to take action against these high officials.
The Awami League leader was critical of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for her claim that a conspiracy is on to kill her by the militants.
He said: "Tuesday's meeting of Khaleda Zia was held at Chandina and the militants were arrested some two and half-an-hour later after the meeting ended… the place from where the militants were arrested was three kilometres away from the meeting venue. How Khaleda Zia can say the militants came to kill her?" he said.
