In view of the global outbreak of coronavirus, Bangladesh Awami League (AL), alongside the government, has taken up various initiatives to contain the spread of the deadly virus in the country, reports BSS.
Party insiders said as part of the AL's awareness campaign, its leaders and activists are distributing masks, hand sanitisers, soaps and other preventive materials free of cost among the people.
They are also disseminating leaflets to make the people aware of the COVID-19.
Besides, as per the directives of Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina, the AL's associate bodies are working at the field level to create mass awareness about the coronavirus.
"On behalf of our party, we are conducting awareness campaigns across the country to prevent coronavirus. The AL and its associate bodies have been distributing masks, sanitisers and food items among the people," AL presidium member Mohammed Nasim said.
On March 21, AL general secretary and roads, transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader formally launched the coronavirus prevention programme by handing over handbills to the Dhaka city AL leaders in the city's Dhanmondi area.
Speaking on the occasion, Quader asked the AL leaders to start work in their respective areas to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Earlier, on March 17, AL sub-committee on relief affairs distributed the coronavirus preventive materials, marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The AL sub-committee on forest and environment affairs is also distributing the coronavirus preventive materials, including masks and hand sanitisers, among people in different parts of the country.
Also, AL leaders have been distributing rice, essential commodities and food items among the poor and landless people and day labourers across the country.
The party insiders said the AL grassroots leaders and workers were also directed to work in unison to tackle the coronavirus crisis.
They were also asked to remain alert so that nobody can spread rumours over the coronavirus.
Jubo League and Awami Sechchhasebok League are distributing masks free of cost and conducting digital campaigns on coronavirus.
Sechchhasebok League general secretary Afzalur Rahman Babu said their organisation is distributing leaflets and virus preventive materials among the people and taking part in different programmes of the party.
"Jubo League leaders and workers are working at the field level to make people aware of COVID-19. We will conduct our campaigns until the coronavirus crisis ends," Jubo League general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan told the news agency.
Bangladesh Chhatra League president Al Nahean Khan Joy said the student's wing is working to create mass awareness on COVID-19 and keeping its watch so that nobody can spread rumours centring the coronavirus crisis.
