AL-backed candidate wins Magura Sadar upazila by-polls

Awami League supported candidate Rostam Ali was elected chairman in Magura Sadar Upazila Parishad by-polls on Tuesday beating his nearest rival BNP-backed candidate Ali Ahmad Biswas. Returning Officer of the election, additional deputy commissioner of Magura, Syed Rabiul Islam announced the results in his conference room around 8pm. Rustam Ali bagged 55,187 votes while Ali Ahmad secured 27, 091 votes. The voting was held between 8am and 4pm at 105 centers to elect a chairman from five candidates while 40 per cent voters exercised their franchise. The chairman post remained vacant as its chairman Nazim Uddin passed away on April 22 last, according to a news agency.
