AL-BNP clash leaves one dead in Rajshahi

Five-six BNP activists hurt

RAJSHAHI, Aug 06: A BNP activist died and several others, including a BNP leader and a student, were injured during a clash with Awami League (AL) activists in Mohonpur upazila of Rajshahi on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Zainal Ali, 32, the son of Puranu Mandal, and a resident of Gopalpur village. One of the injured was the general secretary of Dhuroil union BNP.
As many as 30-40 AL activists, led by Rafiq, his elder son Biplab, younger son Shamim Reza, and Mougachi UP chairman Al-Amin Biswas attacked BNP activist Zainal and his son in Gopalpur's Madhyapara area at 11 am, according to sources.
The attackers stabbed Zainal, and assaulted his son with an iron rod, leaving him severely injured.
Locals rushed the father and the son to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Zainal dead. His body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
About five to six people, including the general secretary of Dhuroil union BNP, sustained critical injuries when they tried to defend the father and the son, the sources also said.
The injured were taken to Mohonpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Mohonpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Haridas Mondal said Zainal died during a clash between the activists of AL and BNP over establishing supremacy.
Being informed, a patrol team of the Bangladesh Army reached the spot and brought the situation under control, the OC added.
