AL, BNP win 2 UZ chairman posts each in Rangpur

Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidates have won two posts of Upazila (UZ) Parishad chairmen each in the elections held in four UZs in Rangpur district on Monday. Returning Officer Md Shahidul Islam announced the unofficial results of Rangpur Sadar, Kawnia, Gangachhara and Pirgachha UZ elections at the Deputy Commissioner's office separately till the early hours of Tuesday. According to the declared unofficial results, AL-supported candidate Nasima Zaman Bobby won the post of Sadar upazila chairman bagging 15,548 votes. Her nearest rival BNP-supported Faruk Mian got 14,167 votes. In Kawnia UZ, BNP-supported candidate Mahfuzar Rahman Mithu won the chairman post bagging 39,624 votes. His nearest rival AL-supported candidate Anwarul Islam Maya got 37,438 votes. In Gangachhara UZ, AL candidate (rebel) Asaduzzaman Bablu won the chairman post bagging 22,494 votes. His nearest rival Shafikul Alam Gani of Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh has got 16,897 votes. In Pirgachha UZ, BNP-backed Afsar Ali won the chairman post bagging 45,749 votes. His nearest rival JP-supported candidate Abu Naser Shah Md Mahbubur Rahman got 38,345 votes, according to BSS.
