AL extends by a month time for proper probe of Sept 12 incident

Thursday, 20 September 2007

Awami League (AL) extended the time for party presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, heading a one-member probe committee, to investigate the September 12 incident of heckling of pro-reform leaders by a group of AL adherents by a month.
The AL presidium member informed journalists at the party's Dhanmondi office in the city Wednesday, reports UNB.
"I need more time for a neutral and appropriate investigation so I sought more time from our acting president, and he gave me time to submit proper investigation report on the assault on party leaders", Sajeda said.
Acting AL General Secretary Mukul Bose, Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan, and AL leaders AKM Jahangir Hossain and Abu Sayeed had come under the fury of the agitating group of party activists before and after the party's Central Working Committee meeting at a trying time.
And acting President Zillur Rahman formed the one-member committee with presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury on September 15 to investigate the incident and asked the probe body to submit its report within seven days.
About the incident Sajeda said she doesn't think it a pre-planned event-it was just an incident.
She said they had already sent letters to the authorities of TV channels for video footage of the rampage. "After getting footage it would be easier to find out who were linked with the incident."
AL central leader Subid Ali Bhuiyan Wednesday submitted a written statement to Sajeda in this connection.
Acting General Secretary Mukul Bose, known as a reformist leader of the party and who was assaulted by the aggressive workers of the party, said he knew them all under whose direction the incident was staged.
He wouldn't divulge the names of those leaders. Bose also informed that he didn't know who the attackers were.
