AL factional clash leaves 1 dead

NETRAKONA, Aug 1 (UNB): An Awami League (AL) activist was killed and 15 others were injured in a clash between two factions of the ruling party in Lepshia Bazar area of Khaliajuri upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Habibur Rahman, 28, a local AL activist.
Locals said there had been a longstanding dispute between Takwa union
AL leaders Kuddus and Khalil over establishing their dominance in the locality.
On Thursday, an altercation took place between their supporters over a trivial matter.
Following the altercation, both groups, equipped with locally made weapons, engaged in a clash around 3:30pm on Friday.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left Habibur Rahman dead on the spot and 15 other activists injured.
The injured were rushed to local clinics.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Khaliajuri thana, confirmed the incident.
Another report adds: Around 40 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League (AL) over establishing supremacy in Sreepur upazila headquarters here on Thursday.
Sreepur thana officer-in-charge Shah Mohammad Awalad said there was a longstanding enmity between AL Sreepur sadar union unit general secretary Mashiur Rahman and Magura district BCL vice-president Abdul Mannan over establishing supremacy in the area.
As a sequel to the previous enmity, supporters of Mannan beat Up Tipu Miah, a supporter of Moshiur around 10 am.
As the news spread, Mashiur's supporters attacked Mannan's supporters with lethal weapons, triggering a clash around 12 pm that left 40 people injured.
Thirty houses were vandalised and looted during the three-hour clash.
On information, police rushed in and lobber tear gas shells and fired bullets to bring the situation under control.
The injured were admitted to sadar hospital and Dariapur hospital.
Police arrested Moshiur Rahman and Abdul Mannan from the spot. A case was filed.
