AL favourite wins 1, its rebel another in UZ re-polling

Awami League-backed chairman candidate won polls in Dumki upazila in Patuakhali while its rebel candidate won election in Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj in Wednesday’s re-elections. In Patuakhlai, AL loyalist Shahjahan was unofficially elected chairman in Dumki upazila as he bagged 11,186 votes while his nearest rival 19-party backed Mohammad Abdul Wahab polled 4,902. In Munshiganj, AL rebel candidate Refayet Ullah Khan was unofficially elected chairman in Gazaria upazila as he secured 28,608 votes while his nearest contestant AL loyalist Amirul Islam got 16,101 votes. Away in Laxmipur, AL-backed vice-chairman candidate Hafiz Ullah was unofficially elected in the sadar upazila as he bagged 117,211 votes, while his nearest rival Jamaat-backed Nasir Uddin polled 116,456. The re-elections in several polling centres in the three districts were held due to suspension of voting over violence during the March 23 upazila polls, according to a news agency.
