Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday the nation is now under the rule of the looters and the rights of labourers are being ignored by the present government.
"The nation is now under the rule of the looters. They were not elected during the last two elections held in 2014 and 2018. The rights of the labourers are being ignored by the government," BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the comments at a Labourers' Convention in front of Ideal High School and College in the capital's Motijheel Pir Jangi Mazar area.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal and Sammilito Sramik Parishad jointly organised the event.
Coordinator of Labourers Employees Convention Organising Committee or Sramik Karmachari Convention Organising Committee and adviser to BNP chairperson Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas presided over the event.
"The government must resign right now, dissolve parliament, reconstitute the Election Commission and hold national elections under a neutral caretaker government," said Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He alleged the government for snatching people's rights. He said that due to high prices of essential commodities labourers and limited income group of people have been passing a difficult time to maintain their families.
"This government is siphoning off money abroad leaving the people half starved," he said.
He said Begum Zia is seriously ill. Only for political vengeance the government has filed false cases against Begum Zia and acting chairperson of BNP Tarique Rahman.
He called upon the government to allow Begum Khaleda Zia to go abroad for receiving advanced medical treatment.
He warned the government if anything untoward happened to Begum Khaleda Zia then the government must take the responsibility.
He criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for issuing falsehoods against BNP chairperson Begum Zia during her (PM) interview with Voice of America in the United States of America.
Fakhrul Islam Alamgir further said that the government has filed false cases against 4.5 million opponents.
He hoped that they (labourers) would also participate in the ongoing anti-government movement for establishing their rights.
BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said this government has usurped the power. He termed the government as looters.
"So you (the government) have to quit the power right now," he said.
President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal ASM Abdur Rob said that the country is passing through a critical time.
He said that people could not maintain their families due to high inflation of prices of essential commodities.
"Please leave the power right now otherwise you (the government) could not escape people's wrath," he said.
Coordinator of Gono Sanghati Andolon Zunaid Saki demanded release of all detained opponents and ailing chairperson of BNP Begum Khaleda Zia.
He also called upon the government to resign immediately and allow holding elections under a neutral caretaker government.
He stressed on mass movement and said that if the labourers of the country take to the streets then the government would not remain in power.
He said that the prices of essential commodities have soared and the workers including the limited income group of the people have been facing difficulties to maintain their families.
He called for establishing labourers rights and provide them salary and other benefits considering the market prices.
