AL govt did not register any protest against crossborder torture: Rizvi

FE REPORT | Sunday, 3 November 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged on Saturday that the former Awami League (AL) government under Sheikh Hasina did not lodge any protest against torture on Bangladeshi people on the frontier by the neighbouring country's (India) border security force over the last one and a half decades.
On the contrary, the Sheikh Hasina regime instead of lodging protest over torture on Bangladeshi nationals on the frontier maintained a subservient relationship with that country.
He made the comments while exchanging views with retired armed forces officials at the party's headquarters in the capital's Nayapaltan area.
Mr Rizvi stressed the need for establishing rule of law aiming to restore democracy in the country.
"The Awami League government (which was deposed recently) didn't do anything for the welfare of the people. They (AL) have politicised the administration, police and other state machineries to establish totalitarian government in the country," he continued.
BNP's voluntary affairs secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sopu, Brigadier Gen (retd) Johur Commando, Colonel ( retd) Abdul Haque, Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Ayub, Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Hasinur Rahman, Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Nawaz, Rear Admiral (retd) Mostafizur Rahman, Air Commodore (retd) Shafique, Air Commodore (retd) Shah Sahe Alam, Squadron Leader (retd) Akter Hafiz Khan, Commander ( retd) Mostofa Shahid and Squadron Leader (retd) Shafiqul Islam were present, among others.
