AL leader Nasim, wife indicted in graft case

Detained former minister for Home Affairs and Awami League (AL) leader Mohammad Nasim and his wife were Thursday indicted by the makeshift special court in a graft case, reports UNB.
The court fixed August 1 for commencing trial in the case.
Nasim and his wife Laila Arzumand Banu, now free on bail, pleaded not guilty and sought justice when Judge M Firoze Alam read out the charges to them in the dock.
Earlier, after briefly hearing both sides, the court rejected the defence plea for discharging the case.
On March 21, Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Akhter Hossain filed the case against the Nasim couple with the Dhanmondi police station for furnishing 'false information' in their wealth statements submitted to the ACC.
Meanwhile, another special court, after closing the arguments made by both the prosecution and the defense lawyers, set August 6 for delivering its judgment on the graft case faced by T&T CBA leader Firoze Mian (dismissed) along with his wife Rawshan Ara, who was tried in absentia.
The ACC filed the case accusing them of acquiring a huge amount of wealth worth Tk 13.4 million disproportionate to their known sources of income.
