AL leader Shamsur Rahman dies: PM shocked

TANGAIL, Jan 2 (BSS): President of Tangail district unit of Awami League (AL) and organiser of the War of Liberation, Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan, died at his residence here last night.
Family sources said, Shamsur Rahman (81), a former joint secretary of the AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC) and Education and Cultural Affairs Secretary, was suffering from old age complications for a long time.
He left behind his wife, one son, four daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina expressed her deep shock at the death of the freedom fighter.
In a message of condolence, she recalled the contribution of the veteran leader to the War of Liberation and country's politics. The country has lost a devoted patriot at his death, she added.
She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
Jute and Textiles Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzak expressed deep shock at the death of Shamsur Rahman Khan.
They also conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
The first Namaz-e-Janaza for Mr Khan was held at Tangail Eidgah ground after Zohr prayers. Later, he was buried at Tangail Central graveyard after second Namaz-e-Janaza after Asr prayers at Bindubasini Boys' School ground.
