LAXMIPUR, Sept 23 (bdnews24.com): A local Awami League (AL) leader was chopped and beaten to death Tuesday night in an incident blamed on political rivals.
Tofael Ahmed (32), Jubo League convener of Noagaon union, Ramganj Upazila in the district, came under attack at 11pm at Hotatia Bazar. He died on the spot.
Fellow Jubo League activist Mokhlesur Rahman (26) was also injured in the incident.
He was first admitted to Ramganj Upazila Health Complex and later moved to Dhaka Medical College as his condition worsened.
Local AL activists blamed the attack on BNP men, a charge the latter denied.
The BNP activists argued the incident had nothing to do with politics.
The police arrested six, Ramgarh police chief Aminul Islam told the news agency.
They were Ruhul Amin (45), Abdul Mannan (24), Abdul Hannan (30), Joton Hossain (23), Abdur Razzak (30) and Habib.
The officer said the wife of the victim charged 49 people, including the six arrested, in a complaint filed with Ramgarh police station Wednesday.
