A local Awami League (AL) activist was shot to death by his party rivals at Puichhari in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Shamsul Alam, 38, son of late Ezahar Miah of the area. Locals said there had been a longstanding dispute between Awami League leaders Putu Member and Mintu over establishing their dominance in the locality, including controlling hilly land and trees. As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of Mintu swooped on Shamsul, a follower of Putu Member, while he was gossiping with others in the Zia Market area of East Puichhari at about 9pm and opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot. Later, the supports of Putu Member also chased the attackers and opened fire on them. However, no one was injured in the counter-attack. Officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station Quamrul Islam told UNB that Shamsul was killed on the spot during a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing supremacy in the locality.
