Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Thursday that the ruling party (Awami League) men have got astounded seeing sanctions imposed on former Army chief Gen (retd) Aziz Ahmed by the United States.
Mr Rizvi was addressing a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital.
He alleged that Aziz Ahmed had played a role in suppressing leaders and activists who were involved in democratic movement.
Mr Rizvi said, "No chief of a paramilitary force in the civilised and democratic world has been involved in such acts."
He said that incidents of crossfire, gunfight and terrorist attacks by ruling party cadres and filing false cases against opposition leaders and activists have increased again.
Mr Rizvi said, "The country and people are not important in the eyes of the government rather they (government) are busy holding on to power."

He termed the Chhatra League as a dangerous threat, saying women and children are not safe in their hands as they are involved in misdeeds.

He lamented that the importers could not open letters of credit (LCs) due to dollar crunch.
He also criticised the government for taking decision on purchasing 261 sports utility vehicles (station wagons) for officials at upazila and district levels.
