AL opposes expansion of caretaker govt

Thursday, 18 October 2007

Acting Awami League (AL) president Zillur Rahman said that it would not be wise to expand the caretaker government (CG) with the appointment of new advisers, reports UNB.
"Only a few months left… I don't think it will be wise to appoint new advisers," he told journalists at his Gulshan house, as there was now such an idea up in the air.
However, Zillur welcomed the Army chief's remark he made in London that he had no desire to become President and the CG's priority was to hold free and fair elections and transfer power.
The AL leader also thanked the government for facilitating detained AL chief Sheikh Hasina to talk to her son and daughter in the USA over telephone Tuesday.
In reply to a question, he said that the AL Working Committee would meet on October 22 to decide whether or not to sit with the Election Commission (EC) to discuss electoral reforms.
Zillur again demanded release of the arrested teachers and students of Dhaka University (DU).
He conveyed greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Durga Puja.
