Thursday, 26 June 2008

Awami League leaders Wednesday renewed their demand for full withdrawal of the state of emergency to pave the way for holding the stalled parliamentary polls in a fair and peaceful manner, reports UNB.

They also demanded that the government hold the national election by October after scrapping the schedules declared for local-body polls.

'No election under the state of emergency can be fair,' AL acting president Zillur Rahman told a discussion at Engineers' Institution in the afternoon.

Awami League organised the discussion marking its 59th founding anniversary with acting president Zillur Rahman in the chair. AL presidium members Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Tofail Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Matia Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Ataur Rahman Khan Kaisar and AL acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Zillur said the government should withdraw the emergency before holding any election in the country as he said no election could be neutral under emergency.

He said the government imposed the state of emergency two years ago saying that it would be only for three months.

Tofail urged the government to create an atmosphere for holding the national election before local polls after lifting the emergency.

He also urged the government and the Election Commission to immediately withdraw the schedules declared for city corporation and municipality elections to save the country from any possible conflicts.
